Antimicrobial Spray Coatings - An Innovative Solution

The use of antimicrobials is not new. Metals such as copper, zinc and silver were used extensively in ancient medicine before antibiotics Covid_prevention_coronaviirus_antimicrobialwere yet to be discovered. Even today, the three metals are being tested and proven to work effectively on a variety of pathogens.

Copper has been proven to zap viruses such as MERS and H1N1 within minutes. Zinc works against Streptococcus pneumoniae, bacteria which causes many respiratory diseases such as pneumonia. Meanwhile, silver works by separating the DNA strands in bacteria. The antimicrobial properties of the metals are further intensified and made effective using zeolites as a carrier. Zeolites are aluminosilicate minerals wherein one of its properties is ionic exchange and works against microbes by exchanging negative and positive ions.

Agion® vs Virus

Antimicrobial Spray Coatings Test Results

A University of Arizona study tested several ionic silver and copper levels to determine if they were effective against the human coronavirus strain 229E*, a strain commonly used as a surrogate for the SARS virus in laboratory research. The research showed a a 90% reduction of the virus within 1 hour and reduced virus levels to below the detection limit (99.99%) following 24 hours of exposure to the coatings. Further test results include:

Test Results

Chinese CDC (2003)

  • Complete inactivation of SARS coronavirus in 2 hours
  • VERO E6 cell substrate, using virus CPE method

University of Arizona (2004)

  • 90% reduction of human coronavirus 229E in 1 hour
  • 99% reduction of human coronavirus 229E in 2 hours
  • 999% reduction of human coronavirus 229E in 24 hours
  • TCID50 technique, monitoring MRC-5 cell monolayers for cytopathic effects

Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (2006)

  • 99% reduction of H5N1 avian influenza in 10 minutes
  • Klein-Defors suspension eradication test

AgION technology is currently used in many applications such as sportswear, footwear, pens, mobile phone, appliances like refrigerators, air conditioner system, refrigeration and ventilation, chopping boards for kitchen, medical device, water filter, air filter, ice makers, etc..

A Note on terminology: Viruses are not alive; they must enter a living cell to grow. Therefore, antiviral agents are said to “inactivate” viruses, not “kill” them.

*While in the same family of strains, human coronavirus strain 229E (used as a surrogate in the study) is not the exact same strain as the coronavirus SARS-2 that causes Covid-19. Further research is being conducted on the prospects of this unique coating on the current strain of coronavirus.  Other coronaviruses include:

  • MERS-CoV (the beta coronavirus that causes Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, or MERS
  • SARS-CoV (the beta coronavirus that causes Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, or SARS

Applications for Antimicorbial Spay Coatings

Permanent Spray Coatings for Slow Release

This antimicrobial spray coating can be applied to frequently touched surfaces anywhere the public gathers: hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, playgrounds, schools, public transport, airports, and more.  Silver’s stable ion exchange process represents a significant improvement over standard organic antimicrobial that dissipate rapidly and tolerences are quickly adapted by the micro-organism.

Unlike Microban disinfectant spray and other antimicrobial sprays, when applied via coating technology, antimicrobial coatings last more than a few days. Depending on the thickness of the coating, years of life can be expected.

This antimicrobial spray coating can be applied to frequently touched surfaces anywhere the public gathers: hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, playgrounds, schools, public transport, airports, and more.

The coatings can be applied with a color or clear. The controlled release of silver and copper ions results in a long-lasting, on-demand, designed to effectively suppresses future contamination. Silver’s stable ion exchange process represents a significant improvement over standard organic antimicrobials that dissipate rapidly.

Alternative for Constant Disinfection

With the onset of the pandemic, antimicrobial spray coatings, now a billion-dollar industry, has garnered more interest for spraying surfaces to prevent the transmission of microbes to humans. Silver_Antimicrobial_sprayThe more permanent spray coating as compared to Microban can be used to provide safer surroundings in settings where it is hard to keep up with disinfection and on surfaces like doorknobs, handles, faucets, elevator buttons, and other frequently touched surfaces.

Antimicrobial coatings can be an alternative to shortages in disinfectants, inconsistent cleaning and disinfecting due to influx of patients and prevent or lessen the transmission of illnesses.

While not a complete replacement for proper cleaning and disinfection, the use of antimicrobial coatings can be a good investment in the long run.  AgION antimicrobials are EPA registered for many applications including contact with food and water, HVAC (air conditioning), products for the construction industry, appliances, fiber and textile, cosmetics etc.

Use Antimicrobial Spray Coatings for...

Hospitals, Clinics & Healthcare

Healthcare Acquired Infections (HAIs) has always been a challenge in healthcare. A constant flow of patients can present a problem for frequent disinfection routines.

Schools, Daycare & Gyms

An affordable alternative for disease prevention with coating designed for door knobs, doors, faucets, lockers, workout equipment, and cabinet hardware.

Retail and Restaurants

Retail businesses, restaurants, and particularly supermarkets, have a high risk of viral and bacterial transmissions through grocery carts and other touched surfaces.

Offices

Modern office environment surfaces can benefit from antimicrobial coatings. Applications include counter tops, and other high touch surfaces like elevator buttons, door handles, doors, and more.

Public Transport

Interior and exterior handles, seats and grab bars are touched almost every minute of the day. Permanent antimicrobial spray coatings helps solve the problem of the spread of disease.

Playgrounds

Help assure a germ-free environment for children by using an antimicrobial spray coating that comes in a wide variety of colors for playground equipment. This can be sprayed on both old and new equipment.
